Nokia C5

NOKIA C5 REVIEW

Nokia first announced its new name-giving policy – all models will come with a designation number from 1 to 9, with 1s reserved for handsets with the most basic functionality and 9s in the names of the most technologically advanced models. The new C series made its debut at the same time. All its members will be aimed at the wide audience and the C5, a Symbian S60 3rd Edition based cell phone, was the first to see the light of day. We have finally managed to get our hands on the handset, so let’s take a closer look and see how it fares against the competition and if has what it takes to win over customers. Nokia C5-00 5MP,The only significant difference between this C5 and the old one is that the new version now has a 5 megapixel camera, which seems to be the minimum you need these days. This is a Symbian smartphone, running the old S60 3rd Edition version of the software rather than the latest Symbian “Anna”. Most people probably won’t care that the software is actually pretty sophisticated and will probably never add any applications to it, which is why Nokia are phasing out S60 in this market segment and are replacing it with Series 40 feature phones instead. There’s a 2.2 240 x 320 pixel display, a well-laid out keypad, 3.5G support and VGA resolution video capture at 15 fps. The Nokia C5-00 5MP supports Bluetooth, microSD memory (with a 2GB card in the box), it has a media player, FM radio, 3.5mm audio socket and an inbuilt stereo speaker. Although the market for this type of device is dwindling, there are still a lot of people out there who might be replacing phones two years or more old who might be in the market for this.Nokia gave no guidance on price, but expect it to be a straight swap for the existing C5.

Nokia X6

NOKIA X6 REVIEW

Nokia released the X6 in November last year. It comes equipped with quick access to social networking apps and unlimited downloads from the Nokia music store. To top this off, this X6 comes with a generous 32GB of storage built into the handset. The Nokia X6 feels like a better version of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, with a capacitive touchscreen and sleeker looks. The Symbian user interface is rather dated, and the touchscreen could be peppier, but, with massive onboard storage and access to a huge catalog of free music, the X6 is worth a look for music lovers. In recent years Nokia has introduced bigger and better phones with the increasing age of technology. With such advancement in progress, it is little wonder that Nokia has succeeded immensely in the innovative world of sleek designing and impressive features that their products distinctively carry. The launch of the Nokia X series certainly created a wave among many and it was thought to be a classic touch to the new age era of technology. The X series is one of the most technically advanced series to be introduced by Nokia and carries a multitude of features that leave users all over the world proud to own such a device. The Nokia X6 similarly is equipped with the latest features and quips that technology can offer. Coming in from the left field as a kind of replacement or upgrade for the Nokia XpressMusic 5800. The Nokia X6 is the first X-series handset and presumably the new brand name for the XpressMusic range. With that in mind you get a 3.2-inch, 360 x 640 pixel, wide touchscreen display that in physical terms is as long as the Apple iPhone, but two-thirds of the width. In use and the screen is responsive and easy to use. There is zero lag, and because it is capacitive rather than resistive, it doesn't require you to push on the screen or use a stylus.

Nokia X3

NOKIA X3 REVIEW

The X3 is Nokia’s latest music phone, but while the name will give many the impression that this is a cut down version of Nokia’s capacitance screen touting X6, in reality the two phones are completely different beasts. Nokia may be pitching the X3 as a budget version of the X6, but the two phones couldn't be further apart in terms of both design and functionality. Whereas the X6 is an all-singing, all-dancing touchscreen device with the bare minimum of physical controls, the X3 is a pretty traditional slider phone with a small screen and no 3G or Wi-Fi support. In fact, even by slider-phone standards, the X3's 56mm (2.2-inch) screen is pretty tiny. Its low resolution of just 240x320 pixels isn't great either, but it's the viewing angle that is its most annoying limitation. Turn it slightly to the left or right, and colours look either very dark or completely washed-out. With its slightly boxy design we wouldn’t exactly describe the X3 as a looker, but when you slide the keypad open you’ll find that at least the extra girth means Nokia has been able to equip it with a relatively spacious keypad. And although the keypad is a flat one piece design, there is a bit of travel in each key which helps make it a fairly easy phone for quickly tapping out text messages. Nokia has also added three music keys on the left-hand edge of the display to let you skip forwards and backwards through tracks as well as starting and pausing playback. Another welcome feature for music fans is the standard 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the phone which makes it easy to swap the supplied earphones for your own cans. The top edge is also home to the standard Nokia mini charging port, but you can also charge the handset via its microUSB port, which may come in handy if you need an emergency battery top up when you’re around a mate’s place.

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

NOKIA 5310 XpressMusic REVIEW

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is an adorable and affordable choice for T-Mobile users looking to chat, groove, and message. This is primarily a music phone, and it's equipped with a full function music player and FM radio. The music player has support for playlists, album art and an equaliser. You can listen to your music using the built-in loudspeaker, or preferably using the stereo headset supplied or a Bluetooth wireless headset (optional extra). The 5310 also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can plug in any standard fit headphones - a definite bonus. The 5310 has a new upgraded audio chip, and the audio quality is impeccable. Really, the music player is just as easy to use as one of Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones, or even a dedicated MP3 player. We like the fact that there's a decent amount of memory built in (30 Mbytes), but you'll definitely want to kit the phone out with a memory card: the 5310 supports microSD cards up to 4 Gbytes, which is enough for around 1,000 songs. MicroSD cards are really cheap these days, so really there's no reason not to go for the maximum size available. The Nokia 5310 COmes WIth Music version has a 2 GB card supplied in the sales package. The candy-bar-style 5310 is mostly gunmetal gray, but there's a splash of bright color along the sides of the screen. (Our test handset had red accents, but you can opt for orange or purple.) Unusually slim for a Nokia model, at 4.1 by 1.8 by .4 inches (HWD), it feels solid yet weighs only 3 ounces. The front of the phone is dominated by a good-looking, bright, 2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display. To the left of the screen are music controls; below it are the number buttons, whose convex design feels good beneath the fingertips. From 16th October 2008, the 5310 is available with the ground-breaking Nokia Comes With Music service. This service is exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse. We're not usually impressed with these kinds of add-on services, but this one is actually quite incredible. When you buy a Nokia "Comes With Music" phone, you get a whole year of free unlimited music downloads! Whatever you download during the year you can keep forever. Now if you are just a modest music buyer you can save quite a lot of money with this. If you're a heavy buyer, or if you'd like to be a heavy but didn't think you could afford to, then this is unbelievably good value! You can even transfer the music to a registered PC as well as your phone. Initially this service will be available only on the 5310 XpressMusic and the N95 8GB Comes With Music Edition. The Comes With Music edition phones are available in a choice of 7 different colours that differentiate the phone from the normal 5310.

Nokia 6300

NOKIA 6300 REVIEW

The announcement of 6300 introduces Nokia into the market of the stylish slim phones, which has been dominated so far by Motorola and Samsung and their respective series- RAZR/SLVR and Ultra. The main characteristic of this phone is its appearance and its ‘feel’ at touch rather than the functionality of the E and N series smartphones. Despite its moderate price the latter is a high quality device relying on high-standard manufacturing and oriented towards customers who would never sacrifice the appeal of the exterior, but don’t really need E50 smartphone or the image-creating 8800, which is two- or threefold more expensive. The 6300's 320x240-pixel (QVGA) colour screen displays up to 16 million colours and is good for viewing photos, watching videos and reading text messages or emails on. Measuring a relatively large 30mm wide by 40mm tall, you won't need to squint when looking at it. Nokia has kept it very simple on this handset and opted for the straightforward Series 40 user interface. This means it's very simple to use and easy to understand, particularly if you're upgrading from an old Nokia phone. The 6300 boasts a camera, a music player, a video player, an FM radio and a voice recorder. The 2-megapixel camera on the back lets you take still photos or shoot video and there's the option to adjust several settings, including a timer and night mode. We're disappointed, however, that there's no auto-focus or flash on the camera as it means that photos come out blurry if you don't hold the 6300 very still, and while there is a night mode, taking pictures in very low light isn't really an option. Other features include an email client that's easy to set up and supports most popular email services, including Gmail and Yahoo mail. There's also a voice recorder, alarm clock, calendar, to-do list, notes, calculator, countdown timer, stopwatch and Java games. Nokia's slogan for the 6300 is "Simply beautiful - beautifully simple." The beauty comes from the sleek, classic design with stainless-steel surfaces, and the simplicity reflects the fact that this is an all-round kind of phone: not a smartphone, not 3G, but including all of the functionality that most people want.

Nokia N95

NOKIA N95 REVIEW

Nokia N95 is the logical heir uniting the previous models in one, making it the top-model in the line for 2006. N95 combines the positive features of a few top-models and it is a multi-functional device with standard size. The Nokia N95 is a somewhat large slider form factor handset. It measures 100mm x 53mm x 20mm (3.9" x 2.1" x .8") in size and weighs 121g (4.3oz), which is to say it is by no means in the running for the thinnest and lightest handset on the market. The front of the N95 has a normal looking silver paint finish, but the sides and back of the device make use of a soft touch style deep burgundy color paint that has a very nice feel to it. Nokia has done a far better job with the slider mechanism on the N95 than it did on the N80. The slider in the N95 relies on a spring loaded mechanism instead of the friction based design used in the N80, which tended to slide open on its own. On top of that, the slider on the N95 moves in two directions, exposing the keypad when slid one way, and a series of 4 dedicated media playback keys when slid the other way.  Nokia’s new N95 is a tri-band GSM handset with 3G and HSDPA support. Like others in the N series it makes a big noise with its numerous bells and whistles, not the least of which is built-in GPS and a 5-megapixel camera. Overall, this means that the N95 is chunky at 99mm tall, 53mm wide and 21mm thick. It’s not all that heavy, though at 120g and this is largely down to the plastic casing, which I have to say is a rather poor choice. On such a high end handset Nokia really should have chosen materials with a more substantial feel.

Samsung Galaxy Fit S5670

SAMSUNG GALAXY FIT S5670 REVIEW

The Samsung Galaxy Fit is a budget smartphone running Android 2.2 (Froyo). Normally these kinds of phones are a bit disappointing, with so many compromises made to meet the price, often hiding the true power of Android and making for an uncomfortable user experience. But for the first time, Samsung have managed to distil the essential features of a high-end smartphone into a fantastically cheap package without really cutting back on any essentials. Samsung’s latest addition to its Galaxy range is the Android 2.2 Samsung Galaxy Fit. The phone's specification suits its budget price - it has a 600MHz processor, a small 160MB of onboard storage and a 3.3-inch 240 x 320-pixel display. At 110x61x12mm and weighing just 108g, it's a compact and lightweight handset. The phone feels well made and seems like a more high-quality proposition than HTC's significantly more expensive Wildfire S. The chassis may be completely plastic, but the combination of the device’s metallic edging and ribbed back panel save it from looking cheap. You know, we weren't expecting a lot from the Samsung Galaxy Fit, but we're very impressed. There's really nothing more that we could ask for at this price. A higher screen resolution would be the bees knees, but even the more expensive HTC Wildfire can't offer this. In fact, we're thinking that the Galaxy Fit could take over from the Wildfire as our favourite budget Android phone.

Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660

SAMSUNG GALAXY GIO S5660 REVIEW

The Samsung Galaxy Gio is outstanding value for money, basically delivering last year's best smartphone experience in a cheaper, affordable package. The Gio runs on Android Froyo version 2.2, and although this is a few generations older than the latest Android systems, we haven't noticed any major downsides during our tests. With 2.2, you have the ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot and share your 3G data with a computer or tablet, and speech-to-text functionality for creating text messages and emails without typing. Samsung also improves keyboard input by including Swype software, allowing you to compose messages with continuous swiping gestures rather than tapping at the screen. There's also a 3-megapixel camera included in this package, with auto-focus software and a range of scene modes, smile detection and a panorama shooting mode. There's no flash for illuminating dark scenes, so you'll want to avoid nightclubs with the Gio, but otherwise the photos are reasonably good.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570

SAMSUNG GALAXY MINI S5570 REVIEW

The Samsung Galaxy Mini is yet another phone that falls under the successful Galaxy brand that started in 2010 with the Galaxy S by the Korean super giant. The Galaxy Mini is aimed at those who are new to venturing into the complicated world of smartphones and it comes armed with a 3.14" capacitive touchscreen, a 600MHz, 3 MP camera and Android 2.2 Froyo.  Not scary at all for the new to the world of the smarter phone. So, the Galaxy Mini is the last shake of the bag. It will never get to rub shoulders with the big and scary smartphones. But it’s not all bad you know. Not bad at all actually for what basically is an entry level smartphone with complete connectivity, social networking, internet, Android apps and music. It’s the right kind of device for smartphone newbies. A good option if you just don’t want to spend a truck-load of money on a smartphone. With this one, Samsung look to encourage their loyal users to consider a smartphone. Versatility and friendliness make Android quite inviting. The Mini has the specs to back that up too. There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy Mini is great value for money. It has all the features of a high end smartphone as it is running Android 2.2. Froyo but just in a smaller package and from £89.99 on Pay as You Go. I see this as one of the best selling entry level handsets mainly because of the Galaxy brand that holds such quality in the eyes of the consumer. Designed for kids, first time smartphone owners and those who are in need of a second phone, I predict that this will be one of the top selling handsets for a while and one of the most popular. But I do recommend that you look at other alternatives other than this before you plonk down the cash, you may find that some more expensive models from other manufacturers are more worthy of your money.

Nokia N80

NOKIA N80 REVIEW

Nokia's N80 was introduced with the second wave of Nseries handsets in November of 2005. It packs quad-band GSM/EDGE support and 3G WCDMA access into an attractive slider form factor. But there is more to the N80 that makes it so interesting. For one, it has 802.11g WiFi support and a SIP compatible VOIP client, meaning you could theoretically use the N80 with a VOIP provider such as BroadVoice or Vonage. When you add a 3 megapixel camera to the mix and a very high resolution display, things start to look very interesting indeed. N80 combines high multimedia and business functionality in an elegant and stylish design with a slider form factor, which helps it keep a relatively small size when closed and be suitable for carrying it in your pocket – something most smartphones fail at. As one of best function rich phones of the N-series, it supports 3G networks with video calling capability, wireless network, a 3-megapixel camera and all this combined with a Symbian operating system turns the handset into a powerful device both for work and fun. People familiar with Nokia's “history” may find out that the N80 resembles the legendary 7650 slider, which ran on a Symbian OS too and was the first phone with a built-in camera. A few years on, the N80 is still using Symbian S60 (a few versions newer) and is one of the first phones in America and Europe to feature a 3-megapixel camera. A standard Nokia N80 package includes the most essential multimedia accessories like headphones (to use with the player and the radio) and a PC connection cable, which is needed when you want to transfer multimedia files between the phone and a PC. This is Nokia’s first three-megapixel camera phone, although there's no auto-focus, unlike the N90. Far more interesting is the fact that Nokia has added 802.11b/g Wi-Fi to the N80. As such, it's one of the first non-Windows Mobile devices to feature Wi-Fi, although Nokia’s implementation is rather unusual - and there's no bundled VoIP client. But more on Wi-Fi later. Let’s start with the basics. The N80 is a quad-band GSM/GPRS handset with EDGE and UMTS (3G). You can use it virtually anywhere in the world with the possible exception of Japan. Using the Symbian/Series 60 operating system classifies this as a smart phone.
