Nokia N80

NOKIA N80 REVIEW

Nokia's N80 was introduced with the second wave of Nseries handsets in November of 2005. It packs quad-band GSM/EDGE support and 3G WCDMA access into an attractive slider form factor. But there is more to the N80 that makes it so interesting. For one, it has 802.11g WiFi support and a SIP compatible VOIP client, meaning you could theoretically use the N80 with a VOIP provider such as BroadVoice or Vonage. When you add a 3 megapixel camera to the mix and a very high resolution display, things start to look very interesting indeed. N80 combines high multimedia and business functionality in an elegant and stylish design with a slider form factor, which helps it keep a relatively small size when closed and be suitable for carrying it in your pocket – something most smartphones fail at. As one of best function rich phones of the N-series, it supports 3G networks with video calling capability, wireless network, a 3-megapixel camera and all this combined with a Symbian operating system turns the handset into a powerful device both for work and fun. People familiar with Nokia's “history” may find out that the N80 resembles the legendary 7650 slider, which ran on a Symbian OS too and was the first phone with a built-in camera. A few years on, the N80 is still using Symbian S60 (a few versions newer) and is one of the first phones in America and Europe to feature a 3-megapixel camera. A standard Nokia N80 package includes the most essential multimedia accessories like headphones (to use with the player and the radio) and a PC connection cable, which is needed when you want to transfer multimedia files between the phone and a PC. This is Nokia’s first three-megapixel camera phone, although there's no auto-focus, unlike the N90. Far more interesting is the fact that Nokia has added 802.11b/g Wi-Fi to the N80. As such, it's one of the first non-Windows Mobile devices to feature Wi-Fi, although Nokia’s implementation is rather unusual - and there's no bundled VoIP client. But more on Wi-Fi later. Let’s start with the basics. The N80 is a quad-band GSM/GPRS handset with EDGE and UMTS (3G). You can use it virtually anywhere in the world with the possible exception of Japan. Using the Symbian/Series 60 operating system classifies this as a smart phone.
