Nokia Lumia 520

The other day, I was talking about Lumia 1520 arriving in Malaysia...I guess most people won't even consider a Lumia or Windows Phone given the price (even though it's much cheaper than Note 3) as more people are into Android and Samsung. 

Anyway, while I was looking at some of the Lumia collection, I saw one at an extremely affordable price range: RM499. That's the Lumia 520. 

DESIGN

While most entry level phones feel cheap and less stylish than the higher-end phones, Lumia 520 has no such issue.

It uses a plastic battery cover like virtually all cheap phones, but the backplate cleverly covers the whole phone apart from the screen. 


This gives the phone a similar unibody look to the high-end Lumia phones, even though this is absolutely not a unibody mobile. To ensure a sturdy feel the cover is reasonably thick, and it has a matt, textured finish to avoid the tacky glossy plastic that plagues many budget mobiles. 

For the price, the Lumia 520 looks and feels like a classy product. Even though the plastic is basic opaque stuff, its ergonomics are pretty good, though. The textured finish offers a bit of extra grip and the carefully curved rear sits comfily in your hand. 

There are even a few neat style touches, such as how the Lumia-staple trio of physical buttons on the right edge of the phone are stark black to contrast punchily with the phone’s hue. 

WINDOWS PHONE 8 stands out GREAT even on low end phones

The great thing about the capability of Windows Phone 8 OS. It’s this consistent level of performance in Windows Phone 8 that makes the Lumia 520 such a top device. It may be cheap, but it is as quick and slick as you like. 

Day-to-day performance is great. And it glitched out fewer times than most Windows phones. This grade of overall experience is better than we’d expect from a low-end Android phone – especially from a company that aggressively goes for the entry-level market like Huawei or ZTE.

Of course, we have the same issue each time we talk about Windows Phone OS....the lack of apps is still an issue but it is definitely improving. And if you get this device, you have the Office Apps: Excel, Word, PowerPoint...probably if you need these apps more than the rest, at RM499, this device is a bargain and a must buy.

Social network feels at ease partly, thanks to the deeply integrated Facebook and Twitter feature on the Windows Phone. 

CAMERA 5MP

The Lumia 520 might cost RM499 but it comes with a 5MP camera. The photos taken with it is pretty cool as well. The disadvantage is the lack of a front camera, thus making the Skype feature pretty useless.

CONCLUSION

Nevertheless, at RM499, Nokia Lumia 520 might just be the right smartphone for you. And if you buy it now, there is a year end promotion by Nokia....you stand a chance to win a trip to Legoland or Grand Prize Disneyland.

Well, I know I haven't been blogging much about connect while on the go. The main problem is not having enough time. It's just plain lazy with a lot of other excuses. 

Anyway, I couldn't help but to keep myself blogging about the latest device from Nokia....Lumia 1520, and it's arriving in Malaysia.

It is at a rather reasonable price....of course, there are a lot of my friends out there who would probably opt for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 instead of Lumia 1520.

Well, it is a natural choice, given the huge discount when buying Note 3 with contract though. Then, a lot of people seem to be talking about Android and how good Samsung is. 

I am not saying that Lumia 1520 is a better device than Note 3 (to clarify this, I'm not buying any Lumia devices at the moment...I'm still using my iPhone 4)...it's just that from the improvement in Nokia devices and Windows Phone, there is a feeling that Nokia and Microsoft are getting it right....slowly but surely. The Lumia 1520 has a much superior camera capability in comparison to Note 3, at a 20megapixels, although it's still way behind the Lumia 1020. Then, let us not forget that Windows Phones are probably the only OS that you can consider doing real work with it, and with a large screen, Lumia 1520 seems like a perfect replacement for both tablet and phone. There are of course the apps limitations and for Google lovers, Android will always be a better option.

But if you are into this big phone devices and you're sick of both Apple and Android, buy the Lumia 1520 then.

Not impressive enough? Well, there is also the dual-LED camera, which helps to get the right color balance out of the flash, making skin tones look far better. It also comes with a new "burst-mode" which takes 10 frames per second, while for those who love the video mode, the iPhone 5S captures high-definition imagery at 120 frames per second.  

RADICAL NEW USER INTERFACE, REDESIGNED NOTIFICATION

The iPhone 5S has a lot of new blurs and layers, tucked-away features, and transitioning animations. The iOS 7's visual foundation is built on three-dimensional effects and faux-perspective. The software also features a dynamic, moving "parallax" wallpaper with "flatter" icons.
The Control Center, which is the swipe-up "cheat-sheet" area of your phone or tablet, allows you to access the device's basic features and functions — ready and waiting when you need them quickly. Separated into four distinct panels (or five, when an AirPlay device is detected), each section offers different core device options, such as radio access or screen brightness. 

Well, this new feature makes the iPhone 5S sounds like an Android suddenly. Anyway, that is my opinion though...anyway, on the other hand, swipe-down and you have a brand new, elegant full-display look at what is coming up, and what you've missed since you last looked at your device. Totally redesigned from the ground up, it's now easier than ever being briefed on what's come into your device at any given time. (guess Apple must have been quite proud of their new design...are you?)

IMPROVED SIRI ASSISTANT

I guess this is the last "IMPROVED" section that I'll be writing. According to Apple, the voice-activated intelligence assistant has grown up. Donning the same old voices but refined vocabulary, the on-hand helper now has much better speech recognition support. Siri is now refined and polished, and, above all else, it works when you need it most, and now accommodates a string of new, different features and services, including access to your device's hardware features.

This is the one last feature that I'll be blogging for the day, but it's also one of the feature that I think deserve some shoutout here besides the "Touch ID". There is a brand new business, enterprise features. The  iOS 7 now comes with per-app virtual private networking (VPN) so you can connect your email account to your office network while keeping browsing on your home Wi-Fi. It also comes with PDF support in email, enterprise single sign-on, and third-party app data protection that keeps data stored in a compartmented and secure way. Something useful finally? 

Anyway, there is another lower priced iPhone, the iPhone 5C that is pretty colorful, just as rumoured....guess Apple is going for all market now...

Nokia Lumia 1020, the next chapter in Smartphone photography...that is a bold statement but not an understatement. Indeed, the Nokia Lumia 1020 just change the smartphone industry ball game a little bit. The camera function of the new Nokia Lumia 1020 is far ahead of the devices in Samsung and also the Apple iPhone.

 

The Nokia Lumia 1020 doesn't feel like a camera when you hold it, which is much better than Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. But its' capability in phototaking is way better. From the lens-holding protrusion on the back and – to a lesser extent – the dedicated shutter button on the right side...all of these simply emphasize the focus on the power of its' camera ability. Nokia is back, it seems and this time in smartphone photography. The 1020 has been kept to be as thin as possible and it is significantly lighter than the 920 at 159g instead of 184g.

The screens are exactly the same at 4.5 inches, but the 1020 feels better in the hand. One of the downside is that Nokia did not incorporate the wireless charging into the phone although phone accessories made it possible.

When you talk about Nokia Lumia 1020, you talk about the camera...and it is so good that it comes with 2 camera apps...such is the emphasis on photography. We have the Pro Camera and also the Smart Camera app. Here is one of the comment from some of those who get a first hand on the 1020....Taking photos is pretty straightforward, and I appreciated the ability to press the shutter button halfway down to focus, just like a DSLR. You can select the focus point simply by tapping the screen, and the button remembers – it returns to the default centre position after a few seconds.

The phone also has 32GB onboard for storage.

The photos taken are amazing....how about sharing it on Facebook?? The high resolution photos will be impossible to upload onto your social network page but the Lumia 1020 thinks ahead for the users...1020 will simultaneously create a 5-megapixel version of your photo for sharing. How cool is that??

Video taking is also very impressive....in fact, I totally agree with how Nokia promoted the phone. Nothing else comes closer to this. Anyone who prioritize taking amazing photos using their smartphone, Nokia Lumia 1020 is the best buy for you....

Well, not surprising at all, given how much similarity when it comes to the S3 and its brother, S3 Mini, the same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 mini.
The design language is nearly identical apart from the notification LED (now absent) next to the earpiece, and the size and general orientation of the camera and sensors on the other side....and oops...how can we not mention this, the S4 Mini is smaller as well. 
Of course, with a 4.3 inch display at the center, it is really not so mini after all...

When comparing side by side with the S4, the S4 Mini qHD display can never really be compared with its elder brother....However, the viewing angles are just as good and the saturation is stunning, as it usually is on AMOLED panels.

You will probably be missing the Air Gestures and Air Views but other than that, it should be quite similar to S4 on the software part. 

So, who is going to grab the S4 Mini??

Jolla Sailfish OS is an operating system developed by a former employee of Nokia MeeGo platform. Now Jolla Sailfish OS based smartphone has been launched with the first name Jolla Phone capable of running Android apps.



The smartphone market will be the arrival of new competitors, namely Jolla Sailfish OS. Sailfish Jolla operating system OS is the operating system that is developed based on the MeeGo platform by Marc Dillon who is a former Nokia employee. Now Jolla Phone, the first smartphone based Jolla Sailfish OS has been launched.



Specifications at a glance Jolla Phone memant not too special, which comes with a screen measuring 4.5 inches with a resolution that is not yet known, but is estimated to HD 720p. Jolla Phone smartphone is available in several colors, ie, orange and green.
