The Nokia C6 is the latest in a long line of modestly priced touchscreen smartphones with side-sliding keyboards from the Finnish company. Nokia doesn't have a particularly good track record when it comes to touchscreen smartphones. The Nokia C6 is a S60 5th Edition mobile computer with a large 3.2", bright nHD TFT color touch screen display, qwerty keyboard, 5 mega pixel Auto Focus with LED flash camera, A-GPS, and WLAN or HSDPA (3.5G). Optimizing the home screen to bring useful and relevant content right to the top is one of the yardsticks of a good user interface. On the C6, which is based on the S60 5th Edition platform, there are six placeholders where you can run a gamut of applications and shortcuts. These include time, date, phone profiles, favorite contacts, email headers and application launchers. While it seems like there's a lot going on here, the most useful (and practical) are the ones that let you jump to a program without having to trawl through several layers of menu pages. The visuals look dated because they haven't changed much since the N97. Ticker tape-style mini apps like the ones for Facebook and AP Mobile display too little information to be of use. The same can be said for email headers on the home screen. It gets worse with the single- and double-tap annoyances. This input method was introduced to maintain compatibility with existing S60 3.x applications. The first tap lets you select, while the subsequent tap executes the command. The user experience here can range from confusion to frustration depending on your tolerance. Given that many competing touchscreen devices offer fluid and logical user interfaces, we're inclined to think the latter. Symbian^3 is supposed to address many of these issues and it can't come soon enough. What we also didn't like were menu options in certain applications which took up precious screen estate and the confusing contextual commands. The latter was especially evident in Ovi Maps. For the rest of the people, the Nokia C6 is neither innovative nor evolutionary device. It doesn’t try to be best at anything, nor pretend something it’s not. The absence of extra perks is understandable for it’s price limit. But if you’re simply on a lookout for a capable and affordable device with one of the best physical qwerty keys out there, the C6 is hard bargain to match.

The E5 is the first device announced for the Eseries portfolio after Nokia clarified its handset naming convention back in March. To understand the positioning of the E5, one simply needs to look at the letter and the accompanying digit. The E in Eseries comprises productivity and business devices, and the number 5 (on a scale of 1 to 10) means the cost of the E5 is best described as middling. The E5 could well go for next to nothing with a two-year plan from a telco operator. The E5 runs the same S60 3rd Edition software with Feature Pack 2 like the E72. However, there are a number of differences beyond that. The E5 has a lower 18-bit screen color depth (24-bit on the E72), 50cm to infinity camera focus range (10cm to infinity on the E72), and lacks an onboard accelerometer. On the bright side, it has twice the amount of RAM at 256MB and a larger F2.4 aperture (F2.8 on the E72). The fixed-focus camera on the E5 also has the Extended Depth of Field feature, which increases the distance of the depth-of-field, keeping more objects in focus. Though the browser is usable, the small 320 x 240-pixel display means Web surfing isn't very enjoyable. Third-party applications are available for Symbian S60, but these aren't as plentiful as what's found on the iPhone and Google's Android OS. If games and programs are important factors in your buying decision, going Symbian probably isn't the best idea. The 5-megapixel fixed-focus camera on the E5 gave decent image quality with acceptable sharpness and good color rendition. We noticed a slight blue cast in the middle of the photo in our test shot, but this should not be too obvious for small, Web-quality snapshots. The 600MHz processor and 256MB RAM did well to keep things chugging along smoothly. We did not feel significant slowdowns when using the smartphone even with the browser, Tweets60 (for Twitter), email and the Bloomberg app all running in the background. Battery life was good, giving us over two days of use on a single charge. Considering most touchscreen smartphones these days require daily charging, this is a very good show from the E5. However, remember that the dwindling third-party support for S60 also means apps are not as compelling. For example, the preloaded Facebook app is very hard to use compared with the Android and iOS versions. Because of lower-quality apps, we ended up doing fewer social-networking activities (such as tweeting and checking in using Foursquare) and spending less time using the browser. That had a part to play in extending the battery life of the E5. The 1,200mAh battery, according to the specifications, has a rated talktime of 18.5 hours on GSM and standby of up to 29 days.

Upon first receiving the Nokia C3, we were decidedly ambivalent. Here was another middling Nokia smartphone that got the basics done but under-delivered on usability and panache, we thought. This phone has one powerful trick up its sleeve, though: its incredibly low price. Quite simply this is the best value phone we've seen all year. Sure, it can't compete with the retina display of the iPhone 4 or the AMOLED displays sported by the Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire, but for the price it is exceptional. The overall design reminds very much of the smallest Eseries phones from Nokia, which gives it a classy more expensive look; the metal plate over the battery is a thoughtful touch as well. Nokia has gone so far as to even skin the interface to look like the ones on the Eseries devices, so you can easily fool everyone around that you are typing away on a business-class smartphone.
